The journey
An overview of the itinerary
This 17-day Vietnam itinerary brings together mountain scenery, historic towns and some of the country’s most striking cultural landscapes. It opens in Sa Pa, where colorful streets, markets, temples and dramatic views over terraced rice fields set the tone. The region also offers a closer look at Vietnam’s ethnic diversity, especially through time spent in Hau Thao with a local Black H’mong family surrounded by rice fields. From there, the journey moves into the highlands of Hà Giang for the famous loop by motorbike. This is one of the most memorable sections of the trip, with winding mountain roads, major passes, remote villages, waterfalls and expansive rice terraces. It’s an intense stop that clearly suits travelers looking for adventure and big scenery. After that, Hanoï provides a short but lively urban break, centered on the atmosphere of Train Street in the Old Quarter. The route then continues to Ninh Binh, known as “Inland Halong,” where karst formations rise above rice fields and rivers. Boat trips, caves, pagodas, panoramic viewpoints and the ancient capital Hoa Lu make this part especially rich in both nature and heritage. The final stretch unfolds in Hoi An, a historic city of lantern-lined streets, old houses, temples and markets. With its museum dedicated to Vietnam’s ethnic groups, strong food culture, tailoring tradition, nearby gardens and river activities, it rounds off the itinerary with a different pace and a strong sense of place.
